Book Review

I did not expect this book to be any good. There are very few books from this time period that I have read that I have found to be that great, but this is an exception. Blood on the River: Jamestown 1607 by Elisa Carbone makes the history of this time period come alive, but has plenty of adventure and excitement to keep the story lively.

Samuel Collier is an orphan in London and is living on the streets, stealing to survive. He is caught and escapes a trip to the gallows by becoming a servant to Captain John Smith. Captain Smith is bound for the New World with the Virginia Company. Samuel struggles to survive with the rest of the company. He learns to fight, hunt, makes friends with the Native Americans, defends himself from the Native Americans and even meets Pocahontas. Thoroughly exciting stuff.

I recommend this book if you enjoy reading about any one of these things: adventure, history, or survival stories.

I believe that grades 6-9. A good reader in sixth grade I believe would not be terribly challenged by this book.

I think for girls who like to read funny books. I think they should read "All-American Girl". It was great!
