The library media center invites all visiting grandparents to drop by our Open House on Grandparents Day on Dec. 12. We will have some pictures of library activities and lots of books available for donation "In Honor" or "In Memory" or as a "Birthday Book." Most of all, we want you to let your grandchild act as tour guide and show you our library and tell you about what they do in the library. We look forward to meeting you then!!

Sixth Grade is learning PowerPoint!

Sixth graders are preparing PowerPoint presentations of research done on the Alabama Virtual Library about India and Egypt. When they are finished, we'll try to post some samples so you can see the results of our work.

If you'd like to visit the Alabama Virtual Library to explore it yourself, just ask your 6th grade student or friend to give you a personal tour. You may get your own AVL password at the Auburn Public Library or the Opelika Public Library.

Friday, at last!

Following directions - that's what we want to do when we come to the library. First grade students practiced that today with games and a fun work sheet. Sixth, third, and fourth graders learned about Fact Hound and how to use that great resource to find good websites. We all plan to enjoy a wonderful, long weekend.

Book Review - - Lawn Boy by Gary Paulsen

The main character in this story by Gary Paulsen, author of Hatchet and Mr. Tucket, learns not lessons in survival like the characters in his other books, but lessons in economics. Read how a simple summer job mowing lawns take its own adventurous turns and provides some cash to boot!

Fact Hound can fetch good websites for us

Today the 3rd and 4th grade students learned about Fact Hound. Fact Hound is in some of our nonfiction books, and he points the way to appropriate and good web sites that can extend what we learn from the books. Be sure to look at www.facthound.com, click the applicable grade level, and enter the code found with the Fact Hound symbol in the book. Then click the Fetch It button. You will see age-appropriate web sites that you can investigate. Another way to use facthound.com is to browse subjects by clicking on letters or on pictures and words. (You don't need a code to do this.)

Check back with us later to see what else our students are learning in Library!

We are back!!

School is well underway, and the library media center is "abuzzing." Our elementary classes are back on their regular library schedule, and we have had orientation for junior high classes. The fourth-sixth graders are busy reading the Alabama Emphasis on Reading books for 2008-2009. Ms. Davis's class visited today to see Space Shuttle programs and learn about the Space Shuttle Missions.

Our first big library event coming up is Teen Read Week, with the theme Books with Bite@ Your Library. High school students - be on the watch for a unique contest with a really neat prize. Details will be coming early in October.

Our Fall Book Fair Safari is scheduled for October 20 - 24. Family Night is Tuesday, Oct. 21 from 4:30 until 6:00.

We have lots of new nonfiction books ready for checkout, and we will soon be getting new fiction books as well. Remember our Birthday Book Club and Honor/Memorial Book program too.

Reading Contest entrant really reads!

Our school winner, and our entrant in the State AISA Reading Contest, read more than 12, 000 pages since the beginning of school! Wow!! Congratulations, Natasha Richardson, sixth grader in Mrs. Parker's class. We are proud of you and are rooting for you to be the state winner as well.

Get your poems ready!

April and National Poetry Month are almost here. Remember that during Young People's Poetry Week, April 14 - 20, we will be celebrating Poem in Your Pocket week with prizes for those people who have poems to read to our mystery poem seekers.

Ben Franklin brings the "Magic of Reading" to LSA

Students enjoyed Ben Franklin's visit to Lee-Scott. He even used our encyclopedias to help us learn about himself. Some of the students took part in electrical "experiments," others answered questions, and all of us learned new information and were encouraged to read for education, to explore, and to help us become experts. Thank you, Ben!

April will be busy!

April is a very busy month for our library. The entire month is National School Library Media Month and National Poetry Month with National Library Week April 13 - 19 and Young People's Poetry Week April 14 - 20. We hope everyone will Join the circle of knowledge @ your library during Library Week and every day!

During Poetry Week Thursday, April 17, is national Poem in Your Pocket Day. We are going to extend that day throughout the entire week. If students, teachers, or faculty members have a poem in their pocket and will take it out and read it when asked by a mystery poem seeker, those people will win prizes. So plan now for poems to put in your pockets all week long. We will be reading and listening to poetry during the week, particularly during our W.O.R.D. time on Monday, April 14, and we will probably have some other surprise activities.

For our fifth graders their almanac study will culminate in our World Almania competition and the crowning of a championship team. This is always an exciting library event.

On the last day of April our Spring Book Fair begins. Plan to visit us during any of our special events and especially during the book fair to stock up on books for summer reading.

Have a great spring break!

Sixth grade students are learning how to evaluate web sites to determine if they are useful for them. Fifth graders are learning about the almanac. Fourth graders have begun learning about the Alabama Virtual Library and how to use it. Author and illustratorTomie dePaola is the author third graders are studying. Kindergarten - second grade students have finished reading for Alabama Emphasis on Reading. Students K - 8 have sent in our votes for favorite books in the Alabama Emphasis on Reading program. We can't wait to see how other students in the state voted. Preschoolers enjoy hearing stories and sharing words beginning with their letter of the week. High schoolers visit the library to work on research and select books. We have been working so hard that we are looking forward to our week of spring break. We hope you all have a happy and safe break.

Still more Read across America photos

There was some serious reading going on.

More photos from Read Across America

What fun it was to have our visitors read with us!

Read across America Day, March 3, 2008

We had perfect weather for our outside celebration of both Read across America Day and our W.O.R.D. (Warriors Own Reading Day). From 9:30 until 10:00 the entire elementary school and teachers (grades preschool - sixth) read on the playground after forming a big "L S A" to show everyone that LSA supports and encourages reading. Dr. Roberts joined us, and we also had visits from the Cat in the Hat and Thing One and Thing Two.

READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY is coming!

Monday, March 3, is Read Across America Day. We will celebrate during our regular W.O.R.D. time - with a special twist to the reading time. Who knows, the Cat in the Hat may also pay us a visit.

Thanks so much!

Thanks to all who participated in our Magazine Sales. Mrs. Clardy's class won the Pig Race and will have a "Pig Out Party" very soon. The dancing animal contest was lots of fun for our top sellers. Remember that you can subscribe to magazines through QSP all year long online and help our library at the same time. Call or come by the library or see the Library Web Page for details.

We need book reviews!

We haven't had any book reviews in a long time. If you would like to post a book review, see Mrs. Story about how to join our LSA Library Blog.
